EMG/NVC Testing
EMG (electromyogram) and NCV (nerve conduction velocity) are often performed together as these tests assess different aspects of nerve function. The EMG is performed by inserting a thinly gauged needle into various muscles to assess the electrical activity of muscles during rest and contraction. The NCV is done with surface recording electrodes and measures how well and how fast the nerves can send electrical signals. Nerves control the muscles in the body by electrical signals (impulses) and these impulses make the muscles react in specific ways. Various nerve disorders – ie. pinched spinal nerve – radiculopathy/sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome and diabetic neuropathy to name a few of the most common nerve conditions & muscular disorders – ie. myopathy can be diagnosed based upon the findings of these tests along with a history and physical examination.

Comprehensive Assessment of Postural Systems (CAPS)
A sophisticated tool used in the assessment of patients with dizziness, vertigo, disequilibrium and imbalance. These complaints are the #1 reason for doctor visits for persons age 65 and older. Testing using the CAPS takes less than one minute and yields information regarding your risk of falling, direction of sway, limits of stability, fatigue and adaptability.
The CAPS system used in this assessment is an extremely sensitive force platform and specially designed software which combine to provide specific details regarding a person’s ability to balance. This system is unique and has been awarded 2 separate US patents. The CAPS is so sensitive to movement that it can display a person’s heartbeat, respiration and will even display forces caused by someone simply blowing their breathe across its’ surface. This extraordinary sensitive allows us to measure the otherwise imperceptible movements a person is always making while standing and to compare their stability to normal age and gender matched data. Armed with this information, we can then provide management options for your complaint of: dizziness, vertigo, disequilibrium and imbalance.
